Glencoe, Scotland – Holiday Destination For Outdoors Lovers

The majestic Glencoe in Scotlands West Highlands is a truly dramatic landscape that is unequalled anywhere else in the UK. Recently voted by Accommodation-Talk, a leading travel article and news site as the most spectactular holiday destination in the UK Glencoe is a must see location for those interested in the great outdoors.

Glencoe is home to some of Britains highest and most spectacular mountains as well as a haven for a wealth of diverse and beautiful animals such as Red Deer and the Golden Eagle. Beacuse of its beauty the area has been the setting for many famous films including Highlander and the Harry Potter films.

The area is Britains favourite for mountaineers and ‘ridge walkers’ who flock to the Glen for an experience that cannot be equalled anywhere else in the country. The stereotypical ‘pyramid’ mountain Buchaille Etive Mor stands as a mighty and impressive guard to the head of the Glen and is the peak that sadly killed several experienced climbers at the beginning of 2009 when they were caught up in an avalanche.

Drama in the glen isnt limited to the present. In fact the macabre history of Glencoe is infamous in Scottish history and has been the scene of treachorous murder and tragedy. A small visitor centre is a great place to discover the natural and human history of the area situated in the middle of Glencoe.

In the centre of Glencoe is possibly the most scenic beer garden in the world! The Claichaig Inn is situated at the foot of several mighty peaks and many a tired and thirsty traveller spent some pleasurable hours here. It is also a focal point for climbers, hikers and adventurers. Watching the diverse range of explorers, climbers, tourists and nature lovers is a good passtime here!

Glencoe itself is sandwiched at one end by the UK’s highest moor, Rannoch Moor and Glen Etive and to the North the small village of Ballachulish at the head of the beatiful Loch Leven.
